Ahrefs Starter plan: what the 50-keyword limit means for a blog

Ahrefs Starter costs $29 a month, and its Rank Tracker follows 50 keywords. The next plan, Lite, costs $129 a month and tracks 750. For a content site, the useful number sits somewhere in between, and neither plan is priced for it.

How fast 50 keywords runs out

Say your blog has 60 posts and you track one main keyword for each. You’re already over 50. Add a second phrase for your ten best posts and you’re at 70. With a cap of 50, you choose which posts to stop watching, and a drop on one of those goes unnoticed until the traffic does.

What the $100 step to Lite buys

Lite raises Rank Tracker from 50 to 750 keywords, and it adds Competitor Analysis, which Ahrefs describes as a tool “for quickly finding keywords and backlinks gaps against your competitors.” It also opens up the rest of the suite: the backlink index, site audits, and the keyword database. If you use those every week, $129 is fair. If you mostly open Ahrefs to check positions and to see what a competitor ranks for, most of that money pays for tools you don’t use.

Cheaper ways to track more keywords

These tools focus on rank tracking. Prices are from each vendor’s own site in September 2026, so check them before you buy.

Tool Cheapest plan Keywords Competitor keyword gaps
SERPROBOT $4.99 a month 75 per bot No, positions only
GapDigest Starter $19 a month 200 Yes, emailed every Monday
Wincher Basic $49 a month 500 across 10 sites From the $319 plan
SE Ranking Core $129 a month 2,000 Competitor research included
AccuRanker $224 a month 2,000 Not listed

SERPROBOT is the cheapest way to watch positions: 200 keywords takes three bots, about $15 a month. What it won’t show you is the keywords a competitor ranks for that aren’t on your list, and for many bloggers that’s the question Ahrefs was answering.

Where GapDigest fits

GapDigest checks your keywords on Google every day, and every Monday it emails three things for each site: the keywords where a competitor passed you, the keywords that moved, and up to 10 keywords each competitor ranks for that you don’t. It has no backlink index and no keyword database. If you need those, Ahrefs is the better tool.

You can see the competitor list for any two sites with the free competitor keyword analysis. The free plan tracks 10 keywords against 1 competitor with no card. The Ahrefs comparison puts the two side by side, with sources.
